You don’t just enrol with “a doctor”. You enrol with a healthcare team.

As our population grows, people are living longer with more complex health needs, and demand for primary care continues to increase. We’re embracing a collaborative, team-based model of care, to ensure our patients continue to receive timely, high-quality healthcare. Now when you enrol with us, you’re able to access our doctors, as well as our wider healthcare team who work together to support your health and wellbeing.

What does team-based care look like for you and your whānau?

We're making it easier for you to get the right care, at the right time, while continuing to provide personal, coordinated care. Team-based care means you and your whānau can access the right healthcare professional when you need them.

1.     More appointment options

When you're unwell, waiting to see your preferred GP isn't practical. Our team-based model gives you the flexibility to book with any of our GPs or Nurse Practitioners, helping you access care sooner while giving you more choice over appointment times and who you see.

When you book through The Doctors App, you will be able to book with any GP or NP who has availability*. When you call us to make an appointment, our receptionist will offer you the next available GP/NP appointment.

We understand that seeing a new GP or NP can be daunting. Learn more about our team members by visiting your practices webpage. That way you can put a face to the name and learn a bit about them before your consultation.

*Most of The Doctors medical centres have this function on; a select group may not, and we do apologise for any inconvenience.

2.     Access to a team of experts

When you make an appointment by phone, our reception team may ask what you'd like to be seen for. They're trained to ask these questions so they can book you with the most appropriate member of our clinical team, whether that's a GP, Nurse Practitioner or nurse.

Any information you share is treated with the utmost confidentiality. By understanding the reason for your appointment, our team can help ensure you receive the right care, at the right time.

Our clinical team members bring different skills, specialisations, experience and areas of interest. By working together, we can better match you with the healthcare professional best suited to your needs at the time.

This collaborative approach means you have access to a broader range of expertise while still receiving the same high standard of care.

3.     Your care is connected and coordinated

One of the greatest strengths of our team-based model is that your care doesn't rely on just one person alone.

All our GPs and Nurse Practitioners work from a shared clinical record. That way, whoever you see for an appointment has access to your medical history, medications, test results and previous consultation notes.

Our clinicians regularly communicate with one another, and work together to ensure your care is consistent, coordinated and informed. Rather than working in isolation, your healthcare is supported by an entire clinical team.

Does this mean I still get to see my regular GP or NP?

Absolutely! We know many patients value having a regular GP or Nurse Practitioner who knows them, their family and their health history. Research continues to show having a regular GP can lead to better health outcomes, particularly for people living with long-term or complex conditions.

Ensuring you see your regular clinician remains an important part of the care we provide.

If you're managing a chronic or ongoing health condition, we encourage you to continue seeing your usual GP or Nurse Practitioner whenever possible. They understand your medical history and can help guide your long-term healthcare journey.

If your regular GP or NP isn't available and your health concern can't wait, another member of our team can step in, with access to your shared clinical record and the support of your usual healthcare team.

If it's your first appointment with a new clinician, and you’re living with any long-term or complex health conditions, we may recommend a double appointment to allow enough time to understand your health history and provide the best possible care.

An even wider team supporting your wellbeing

Alongside our GPs, Nurse Practitioners and nurses, our wider healthcare team provides support to improve access to specialist services.
